About the model

The Smith D-Direct 55 is a deep-diving sinking minnow for river fishing where fish are holding low, close to bottom structures, or behind pronounced ledges. The model is based on the D-series' active minnow concept but clearly distinguishes itself with a longer and more protective lip.

With a 55 mm body and 6 g weight, the D-Direct quickly reaches its working depth. The long lip helps the lure dive steeply, maintain depth, and reduce the risk of snagging when fished close to the bottom, rocks, and steep edges.

This is the model you choose when regular minnows run too shallow, or when you need to fish faster and deeper through sections where trout are hiding and won't rise far to strike.

KEY DATA Technical Specifications

The D-Direct 55 is designed for targeted fishing in deeper river sections. Its compact body, high specific weight, and long lip allow for quick descent, good bottom contact, and stable action when the lure is pulled through thresholds, pools, and current edges.

WALK AND RESPONSE This is how it works in the water

The D-Direct 55 is designed to get down quickly and stay there. Its long lip grips the water early in the retrieve and drives the lure deeper than a regular minnow of the same size.

In the water, it has a tight wobble/roll action with a distinct yet controlled vibration. It's not designed for wide, loose swings in shallow water, but rather to work steadily in the depths where currents, rocks, and water pressure make presentation more challenging.

The long lip also serves as practical protection when the lure is near the bottom. When the wobbler hits rocks or hard structures, the lip often makes first contact, allowing the body and hooks to more easily lift past the obstacle.

The D-Direct 55 combines a fast sink rate, deep swimming action, and bottom-hugging control – especially useful when fish are behind ledges, in deep channels, or close to rocks.

USE IN FIELD When and where it fits best

The D-Direct 55 is best suited for spots where you usually struggle to get a small crankbait deep enough. Use it in deep pools, pronounced drop-offs, downstream edges, rocky channels, and strong currents where trout lurk low and hidden.

Fish it across or slightly downstream, letting the lip work the bait down into the water column. Maintain steady contact with the rod tip, and use a controlled retrieve rather than large jerks. Short stops and subtle changes in tempo can be enough to break the rhythm without the bait losing depth.

The D-Direct is particularly effective when you want to fish a specific spot: behind a large rock, under a drop-off, along the edge of a deep channel, or in the transition between fast current and calmer backwater.

In very shallow water or over abundant vegetation, it quickly becomes too deep. In such cases, the D-Contact, D-Compact, or D-Incite are often more precise choices. But when the task is to get down and keep the bait close to the fish, the D-Direct is the right tool.

Background and Development The Story Behind the Series

The D-Direct 55 was developed for areas that conventional sinking minnows often don't cover adequately. Many river spots have fish holding deeper than one meter, behind thresholds, or close to bottom structures, requiring a lure that sinks quickly without losing stability.

The long lip is central to the design. It gives the D-Direct a more crankbait-like function than the other D-models: faster diving, better bottom-hugging control, and less risk of snagging when fished close to rocks and edges.

At the same time, it retains the D-series' compact minnow profile and active river character. The result is a model not primarily designed for shallow and aggressive retrieves, but for direct presentation into deep holding areas where fish often feel secure.

The D-Direct 55 is the deep-diving specialist in Smith's D-series – designed for thresholds, deep gullies and near-bottom habitats where normal minnow fishing doesn't reach deep enough.
