About the model

The Smith D-Contact 85 is not just a larger version in the D-Contact series. This model was developed for more aggressive fishing in main rivers, where larger fish, stronger currents, and longer distances demand higher performance in casting distance, sink rate, and control.

With an 85 mm body, 14.5 g weight, and fixed tungsten weighting, you get a heavy sinking minnow that cuts efficiently through the air, quickly sinks into the water column, and maintains better contact through the current.

The D-Contact 85 is particularly well-suited when fish are deep, far out in the river, or in strong current seams where lighter lures are lifted too high or lose their working depth. This model is for precise, active fishing for larger salmonids in challenging waters.

KEY DATA Technical Specifications

The D-Contact 85 is built around an extremely compact and heavy body with fixed tungsten weights. The design allows for long casting distances, quick descent, and stable swimming balance even when water pressure varies with current, rod action, and retrieval speed.

WALK AND RESPONSE This is how it works in the water

The D-Contact 85 is designed to withstand water pressure. Its heavy, slim body remains stable in the current and provides good contact with the lure even when fishing through main currents, current edges, and deeper channels.

With a twitch, it produces quick side-to-side movements and clear flashes. With a harder jerk, it transitions into a broader sliding motion before gathering itself and continuing in a controlled manner. This provides a more aggressive response than with a pure, steady retrieve.

An important characteristic is the short inertia slide phase between movements. After a jerk, the lure momentarily glides at low speed before stabilizing. This creates a natural break in the retrieve and can trigger fish that are following closely behind.

The crane swivel construction in the hook hanger is designed to give the hook better freedom of movement during the fight. This is particularly relevant when dealing with larger fish in currents, where rotation, angle, and pressure often determine whether the fish stays hooked.

The D-Contact 85 combines heavy fixed balance, strong current stability, active twitch/jerk response, and a short slide phase, making it particularly effective in demanding river fishing.

USE IN FIELD When and where it fits best

The D-Contact 85 is best suited for larger rivers, main currents, and deep sections where you need a lure that quickly reaches depth and maintains its working depth. It is particularly effective along current edges, breaks, deep channels, behind rocks, and in fishing spots far from the bank.

Use it when you want to fish actively and precisely, not just by reeling it in steadily. Let the lure sink to the correct level, maintain contact with the rod tip, and retrieve it with short twitches, jerks, small stops, and controlled drifts.

This model excels when conditions require more weight and penetration than smaller crankbaits provide. In low water conditions, very shallow water, or with extremely shy fish, a smaller model might be more natural. However, when current, depth, and distance become more important, the D-Contact 85 is the right tool.

Background and Development The Story Behind the Series

The D-Contact 85 was developed as a more targeted heavy sinking minnow for main rivers and large salmonids. Smith took the basic idea from the D-Contact concept – high specific gravity, compact body, and active presentation – and adapted it for larger waters, stronger currents, and more aggressive fishing.

During its development, Smith focused on three things: long casting distance, the ability to quickly descend in the water column, and stable swimming balance under varying current pressure. The result was an 85 mm model with fixed tungsten weight, a heavy body, and an action that can be precisely controlled with rod angle, retrieve, and jerks.

The D-Contact 85 is therefore not just a “large 72”. It is a distinct model with greater power, more range, and a more aggressive role in the D-Contact universe.

The D-Contact 85 is Smith's heavy sinking model for larger rivers and more aggressive fishing – designed for situations where casting distance, depth, and control under water pressure are crucial.
