About the model

The Smith D-Contact SP is the suspending version of the D-Contact, designed for situations where fish follow but don't strike when the lure sinks too quickly out of the strike zone.

Instead of falling during pauses, the D-Contact SP remains in the same water column. This makes the model particularly effective when you want to fish slower, incorporate clear stops, and keep the wobbler in front of the fish for longer.

With a 50mm body, 2.8g weight, and silent construction, this is a precise finesse wobbler for clear water, calmer sections, steady currents, and technical fishing for wary fish. It offers the D-Contact profile but with a completely different role: more time in the strike zone, less drop, and better control in shallow working depths.

KEY DATA Technical Specifications

D-Contact SP is designed for controlled fishing in the same water column. Its suspending balance allows you to combine retrieves, twitches, and pauses without the lure quickly leaving the depth you are fishing at.

WALK AND RESPONSE This is how it works in the water

The D-Contact SP is designed to give anglers more control over the pause. Where a regular D-Contact continues to sink when you stop retrieving, the SP version stays in the working layer, giving the fish more time to decide.

With a slow retrieve, it moves with a controlled minnow-like motion. Short twitches cause small side movements and flashes, but without diving too deep after each stop. This provides a more precise and calmer presentation than the heavier sinking models.

The most important feature is that you can switch between active retrieval and short pauses at the same depth. This is especially useful in cold water, after periods of low activity, or when fish are visible but not responding to fast and aggressive retrieval.

The silent construction ensures that the lure does not add extra rattling sounds. Instead, the presentation relies on its silhouette, small changes in direction, flashes, and its ability to remain suspended in the strike zone.

The D-Contact SP is a D-Contact for slower and more technical fishing — a small suspending minnow that stays in the zone when the pause itself is the trigger.

USE IN FIELD When and where it fits best

The D-Contact SP is best suited for shallow and medium-shallow areas where you want to keep the lure in front of the fish for a long time. It is particularly effective in calm pools, even currents, clear current edges, backwaters, small lakes, ponds, and areas where fish follow without striking.

Fish it with short twitches, slow retrieves, and controlled pauses. Let the lure stop in the water column after each twitch, and give the fish time. Often, it is precisely the stillness after the movement that triggers a strike.

Choose the D-Contact SP when the regular D-Contact sinks too fast, or when the FES still moves too much downwards during pauses. The SP version is best when you want to fish more precisely at the same depth, especially in clear water or when the fish are sluggish.

In strong currents, deep holes, or early season with high water, the classic D-Contact 50, 63, or 72 will often be better. But when you need a small lure that stays in the strike zone during stops, the D-Contact SP is the most precise choice.

Background and Development The Story Behind the Series

The classic D-Contact series is known for its heavy, sinking construction, rapid depth control, and active river fishing. The D-Contact SP takes the same basic profile into a more technical and slow fishing situation.

The SP version was created to expand the range of applications for the D-Contact concept. Instead of prioritizing rapid descent and strong currents, it prioritizes control in the same water layer, pauses, and more precise presentation in front of fish that are not aggressively chasing.

This makes the model particularly relevant when the water is cold, clear, or calm, and when fish respond better to short movements followed by stillness. It also works well when fishing known holding spots where you want to keep the lure longer in the exact right position.

The D-Contact SP is the technical suspending model in the D-Contact family — made for pauses, precision, and controlled fishing in the same water column.
