About the model

The Smith D-Compact 45 is a compact, heavy-sinking minnow designed for small and medium-sized rivers, crafted for precise fishing both upstream and downstream.

With a 45mm body and a weight of 3.5g, you get more reach, depth control, and presence than with the very smallest micro-lures, yet it still maintains a profile small enough to work well in clear water and low flow conditions.

The D-Compact 45 is particularly well-suited for rapids, small pools, rocky channels, clear current edges, and technical river sections where fish hold close to structure. It is easy to control but has enough self-weight to maintain contact when the current starts to work against the lure.

KEY DATA Technical Specifications

The D-Compact 45 combines a compact size, fixed tungsten weight, and active wobble/roll action in a small, heavy sinking minnow designed for small to medium-sized rivers. This model is engineered for precise guidance, quick twitch responses, and excellent control in low water flows, rapids, and short holding spots.

WALK AND RESPONSE This is how it works in the water

The D-Compact 45 has an active wobble/roll action that makes it fish well even with a steady retrieve. Its compact body quickly grips the water, and the fixed tungsten weight provides stability when the lure is pushed through currents, small channels, and turbulent surfaces.

With short twitches, the wobbler makes quick side movements and a clear flash. By using sideways movements with the rod tip, you can make the lure break its rhythm without shooting too far out of the zone. This makes the model particularly effective in short casting situations where precision is important.

The D-Compact 45 has more presence than the 38 mm, but is still small enough to be presented naturally. It therefore strikes a good balance between finesse and control: a small profile, quick response, and enough weight to maintain the correct water depth.

The D-Compact 45 combines a compact size, active wobble/roll, fast twitch response, and good control for small to medium-sized rivers.

USE IN FIELD When and where it fits best

The D-Compact 45 is best when the water is low, clear, or technically challenging, but you still need a bit more range and water contact than the D-Compact 38 provides.

Use it in small to medium-sized rivers, shallow rapids, pools, channels, and along current seams. It works well both when fishing upstream, allowing the lure to return controllably with the current, and when fishing across or downstream with short, precise drifts.

Guide it with small movements. Short twitches, sideways rod tip movements, small stops, and controlled retrieves are often more effective than large jerks. In low water conditions, you can hold the rod a little higher and shorten the sink time to avoid bottom contact.

Choose the D-Compact 45 when you want a small but distinct wobbler for trout fishing in rivers. If the water is extremely shallow or the fish are very cautious, the D-Compact 38 or D-Compact 45 FES might be more discreet. If the current is stronger or the pools are deeper, the D-Contact 50 or 63 can provide more weight and depth control.

Background and Development The Story Behind the Series

The D-Compact 45 is the slightly more powerful model in the D-Compact series. It builds on the same compact idea as the D-Compact 38, but offers greater range, better water contact, and a more distinct profile in the current.

Smith Europe describes the D-Compact as a model for small and medium-sized rivers, with good control and high responsiveness to the angler's movements. It is designed to be easy to use, yet technically advanced enough for short twitches and lateral rod movements to trigger strikes.

Compared to the D-Contact family, the D-Compact is more concentrated and small-scale in its expression. It is not primarily intended for large rivers or deep main currents, but rather to provide precise control in shorter river sections where fish are close to structure.

The D-Compact 45 is a compact, technical, and easily controlled heavy sinking minnow for small to medium-sized rivers—designed for low water flow, short casting distances, and precise retrieves for trout and other smaller predatory fish.
