About the model

The Smith D-Compact 38 is a small, yet highly technical heavy sinking minnow for precise fishing in small to medium-sized rivers. It is designed for situations where you need a compact lure that still casts well, sinks quickly, and responds clearly to short movements.

With a 38 mm body and 2.5 g weight, this is one of the most refined models in Smith's trout range. The fixed tungsten weight provides better stability and contact than its size alone would suggest, while the compact body makes it easy to position in tight spots.

The D-Compact 38 is particularly well-suited for small rivers, streams, rapids, rocky areas, and low water levels, where fish often hold close to structure and respond to short, precise movements rather than large sweeps.

KEY DATA Technical Specifications

The D-Compact 38 is designed for small-scale river fishing where control, responsiveness, and precision are more important than size. The model features a fixed tungsten weight, a heavy sinking construction, and a body designed for a distinct wobble/roll, flat-side flash, and quick response to twitches.

WALK AND RESPONSE This is how it works in the water

The D-Compact 38 has a more pronounced wobble/roll movement than one would normally expect from such a small minnow. Its flat body provides a clear flash when the lure twists, while its short body ensures a quick response even with small movements of the rod tip.

When retrieved steadily, it has an active but controlled action that works well in short stretches of current and small pools. When you add a light twitch, it responds with rapid side-to-side movements and short darting motions without becoming difficult to control.

The short inertia slide movement is important in small holding spots. After a jerk, the lure glides a short distance before stabilizing again, creating a small, natural imbalance that can often trigger fish hiding close behind rocks, along the bank, or at the edge of the current.

The D-Compact 38 combines a small silhouette, distinct wobble/roll, rapid twitch response, and precise depth control in a format that is well-suited for technical fishing in smaller rivers.

USE IN FIELD When and where it fits best

The D-Compact 38 is best suited when the water is clear, shallow, or technically challenging, and when the fish are in small and precise holding spots. It is particularly effective in streams, small rivers, shallow rapids, rocky channels, small pools, and short current edges.

Fish it with short casts, light rod action, and good line contact. Let the lure sink briefly before you start, and work it back with small twitches, short stops, and controlled drifts. In fast water, small movements are often enough; in calmer pockets, you can use slightly longer pauses and retrieve it more slowly.

Choose the D-Compact 38 when the D-Contact 50 is too large or too heavy, but you still need a sinking lure that fishes faster and more precisely than a regular lightweight minnow. It is especially useful when the fish are wary, the water flow is low, or the holding spots are so small that large presentations would be unnatural.

In larger rivers, deeper pools, or stronger currents, the D-Contact 50, D-Contact 63, or D-Compact 45 will provide more range and weight. But when precision, a small profile, and quick response are most important, the D-Compact 38 is a very strong choice.

Background and Development The Story Behind the Series

The D-Compact series was developed as a more compact and easily controlled version of Smith's heavy sinking concept. The D-Compact 38 is not just a smaller D-Contact 50; it has its own role, with greater wobble movement, distinct darting on twitch, and a more micro-compact presentation.

Its construction is based on a curved back, flatter sides, and a thin lip designed to balance sharp swimming action, water contact, and strength. Together with fixed tungsten weight, this creates a small wobbler that can be precisely controlled with rod angle, retrieve speed, and line pressure.

The D-Compact 38 is therefore particularly relevant for fishing where small margins are decisive: short casts, small current windows, low water flow, and fish that do not tolerate a large or aggressive presentation.

D-Compact 38 is Smith's micro-compact heavy sinking minnow for technical river fishing — small in size, but made for precise control, quick response, and high fishability in demanding small waters.
