About the model

The Smith D-Compact 45 FES is the Feather Sinking version of the D-Compact 45, designed for shallow river sections where a regular heavy sinking wobbler would be too heavy or too difficult to keep above the bottom.

With a 45 mm body and 2.0 g weight, you get a light, precise, and quiet minnow that can be fished more slowly through 30–50 cm of water without losing control. It is developed for situations where fish are in shallow water, the current is slower, or where you need a longer drift and more delicate presentation than the regular D-Compact 45 offers.

The D-Compact 45 FES is particularly well-suited for small rivers, shallow rapids, riffles, low pools, and technical stands where fish often hold higher in the water than many believe.

The D-Compact 45 FES is designed to remain controllable in shallow currents. Where standard heavy sinking models quickly go too deep, the FES sinks more slowly and allows you to fish more precisely through short, shallow zones.

When retrieved steadily, it moves with a light and natural minnow action. With short twitches, it makes small side movements and discreet flashes, without shooting too deep after each jerk. This makes its action more finesse-oriented than the standard D-Compact 45.

The most important difference lies in the pause and drift. The FES gives you more time in the strike zone, allowing the lure to be presented more slowly over shallow rocks, small gutters, and clear current edges. This is particularly useful when fish are following but not striking at a fast or aggressive retrieve.

The D-Compact 45 FES offers a lighter, quieter, and more precise presentation than the standard model – perfect when fish are in shallow water and the bait needs to be held in the correct water layer for a long time.

USE IN FIELD When and where it fits best

The D-Compact 45 FES is best suited for shallow river sections of approx. 30–50 cm, small streams, low rapids, riffles, clear current edges, and areas with low water flow. These are often places many overlook because they seem too shallow, but precisely such zones can hold active trout.

Fish it with short casts, light rod action, and controlled line contact. Let the wobbler sink briefly, and work it through the zone with small twitches, slow retrieves, and short stops. In shallow water, movements should be precise, not large.

Choose the D-Compact 45 FES when the regular D-Compact 45 is too heavy, when you get too much bottom contact, or when the fish requires a calmer presentation. It is particularly effective in low water levels, clear water, and summer conditions where the fish are higher up and more selective.

In strong currents, deeper pools, or early season with higher water flow, the standard D-Compact 45 or D-Contact 50/63 will provide more depth control. But in shallow and technical zones, the FES version is often the right tool.
