About the model

The Smith D-Contact FES is designed for times and places where the classic D-Contact is too heavy or sinks too quickly. When the water calms down, the current weakens, or the fish require longer pauses, the FES version provides a more controlled and delicate presentation.

It still sinks, but with a lower specific gravity than the original model. This allows the wobbler to be fished more slowly, stay more horizontal in the water, and move with a distinct side-to-side oscillation during retrieve, twitch, and short stops.

The D-Contact FES is particularly suitable for calmer river sections, small pools, calm current edges, lower water flow, and clear water where fish follow but don't always strike at aggressive retrieves.

KEY DATA Technical Specifications

D-Contact FES is available in 50 mm and 63 mm. Both variants are lighter than the classic D-Contact models and are designed for more sensitive guidance, shallower working depth, and better control in calmer waters. The sources state 50 mm / 3.2 g and 63 mm / 4.5 g, sinking, silent, and 30 cm+ swimming depth.

WALK AND RESPONSE This is how it works in the water

The D-Contact FES differs from the classic D-Contact in that it is not designed to sink quickly in deeper and harder currents. It sinks more slowly and maintains a more horizontal position, allowing for better control when you want to fish slower.

With a steady retrieve, the FES has a more subdued and natural side-to-side movement. It is less aggressive than the original model, but precisely for this reason, it is strong when fish are cautious, the water is clear, or the current does not provide enough pressure to properly activate a heavier lure.

With short twitches, it makes small changes in direction and discreet flashes without shooting out too aggressively. Pauses can be held longer than with a heavier D-Contact, as the lure does not fall out of the working layer as quickly.

D-Contact FES offers a lighter, more horizontal, and more delicate presentation than the original — perfect when fish need to be triggered with calmer movements and longer pauses.

USE IN FIELD When and where it fits best

The D-Contact FES is best suited when the river has lower water levels, when fish are in calmer pockets, or when fishing in clear water where a too heavy and aggressive wobbler might be too much. It is particularly relevant in small pools, still currents, calm inlets, slow-flowing sections, and shallow zones.

Use it with short casts, light rod action, and controlled line contact. Let the wobbler sink briefly before you start, and retrieve it with small twitches, gentle stops, and steady reeling. Unlike the classic D-Contact, the FES doesn't require as strong jerks to work well.

Choose 50 mm when fish are taking small baitfish, the water is clear, or you are fishing in short and precise spots. Choose 63 mm when you want a bit more profile, better reach, and more visibility, but still want to maintain the softer FES presentation.

In strong currents, deep channels, or early season with high water, the regular D-Contact 50, 63, or 72 will often be a stronger choice. When conditions are calmer and fish are more selective, the D-Contact FES is the right tool.

Background and Development The Story Behind the Series

The D-Contact became known as a heavy, sinking minnow for active river fishing, especially during periods of stronger water flow and the need for rapid depth control. The FES version was created for situations where the same basic idea needed to be toned down: less weight, slower sink rate, and more delicate retrieve.

Instead of replacing the classic D-Contact, the FES complements it. The original is strong when the water is flowing hard and the lure needs to get down fast. The FES is strong when the water calms down, fish are holding higher, or you need a wobbler that can be fished slower without losing control.

Its horizontal sink and side-to-side movement make the FES especially relevant later in the season, at lower water levels, or in sections where fish react better to natural movement than to aggressive twitching.

D-Contact FES is the more finesse-oriented version of D-Contact — designed for calmer waters, longer pauses, and a more delicate presentation for trout, char, and other wary fish.
